Got your hands on a new Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL smartphone? One of our favorite features on the Pixel 3 actually debuted on the Pixel 2.
You can also choose to get notifications here or turn them off. The fingerprint sensor on the back of the Google Pixel 3 or 3a does more than just unlock your phone. You can swipe your finger down or up on it to pull the notification drawer down or push it up. You can also turn it off completely if you want to just rely on pressing and holding down the home button, or on tapping the Assistant icon in the Google Search bar.
You can squeeze the phone to silence an alarm, timers, notifications, and incoming calls, and you can toggle this off in the same screen. There are several ways to have your phone bypass the lock screen. But there may be a few moments when you may want to quickly lock down your phone to make sure no one can access it without your lock screen password.
Tired of your screen constantly rotating when you shift orientation? Auto-rotate is a handy feature, but it can be a bit too sensitive. A new smart rotation tool in Android 9 Pie makes it so that you can leave the auto-rotate toggle turned off all the time.
How does it work? Well, first you actually do need to turn screen auto-rotate off.
Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL problems and how to fix them
Pull the notification bar all the way down until you see the quick settings tiles. Find Auto-rotateand tap on it to turn it off if it was on already. When you go back into portrait orientation, the button will pop up again, and just press it to lock it back to portrait.
Open the camera app by double tapping the power button, or by finding it in the app drawer. Keep in mind, this uses up more device storage. Read our complete guide to Pixel 3 photography for even more info. A slider will show up, and you can move the dot around to choose at what percentage you want Battery Saver mode to kick in.A proximity sensor is a sensor able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact.
A proximity sensor often emits an electromagnetic field or a beam of electromagnetic radiation infraredfor instanceand looks for changes in the field or return signal. The object being sensed is often referred to as the proximity sensor's target. Different proximity sensor targets demand different sensors. For example, a capacitive proximity sensor or photoelectric sensor might be suitable for a plastic target; an inductive proximity sensor always requires a metal target.
Proximity sensors can have a high reliability and long functional life because of the absence of mechanical parts and lack of physical contact between the sensor and the sensed object. Proximity sensors are also used in machine vibration monitoring to measure the variation in distance between a shaft and its support bearing. This is common in large steam turbinescompressorsand motors that use sleeve-type bearings. International Electrotechnical Commission IEC defines the technical details of proximity sensors.
A proximity sensor adjusted to a very short range is often used as a touch switch. Proximity sensors are commonly used on mobile devices. When the target is within nominal range, the device lock screen user interface will appear, thus emerging from what is known as sleep mode.
Once the device has awoken from sleep modeif the proximity sensor's target is still for an extended period of time, the sensor will then ignore it, and the device will eventually revert into sleep mode.
For example, during a telephone callproximity sensors play a role in detecting and skipping accidental touchscreen taps when mobiles are held to the ear.
Proximity sensors can be used to recognise air gestures and hover-manipulations. An array of proximity sensing elements can replace vision-camera or depth camera based solutions for hand gesture detection.

I've found that when my screen fails to turn itself off, which happens occasionally, the problem is quickly solved by my cheek hanging up the call for me. Turning off the feature purposefully would prove disastrous. Android screen blanks out during the call so you can't press 1 when they say: "press 1 for whatever".
Nothing brings the screen back up, volume buttons or power buttons. Even holding the power down for 20 seconds does nothing. All the thing does is occasionially flash the screen at you according to the proximity sensor, so waving your hand in front of the proximity sensor sometimes gets it working, but other times the entire phone is useless.

You can turn this tile on before placing such a call, and then turn it off after the call to resume normal functionality. Also, please send feedback via Settings to let the development team at Google know that this feature is important to you.

The easy answer is I just use the speaker function, since the proximity sensor doesn't seem active then. However, that means my calls need to be done in private unless I want everyone around me to know who I am calling.
