It was never a question of what, or why, but how. I am very grateful for my first two co-ops. The first being a small clean energy tech startup, and the second being a mid-size underwater autonomous vehicle robotics company.
Both further deepened my knowledge of mechatronics and its various applications to many different fields — particularly manufacturing and autonomous robotics. Each of these experiences enlightened me in ways school never would have been able to, as well as contributed to my long-term goal. GA is the part of an automotive manufacturing line after Body in White chassis assembly and Paint where the car is transformed from a chunk of painted metal into a stunning all electric vehicle.
Parts added to the vehicle are also manufactured in house at Tesla, such as the electric motor sthe touch screen, battery pack, etc. After a couple weeks there, I transferred to Automation Controls Engineering since my old boss resigned which is where I wanted to be in the first place.
This department automates the process of manufacturing the cars, motors, and more using thousands of robots and controllers — designing the machines that build machines. There have been intern events every couple weeks, including a fall fiesta and massive intern hike, however there are always interns hanging out on weekends and going on trips or hikes like Kauai and Yosemite.
Being on the manufacturing side of things is intense. So far it has been successful, allowing myself and many other engineers to develop new sensors and actuators to implement on the line, and even simulate and program a very large robotic arm. In the new year, I will be tasked with a large automation project at the Gigafactory in Reno and possibly even Shanghai. International Co-op Instagram Photo Contest!

Tesla last week reported a surprise GAAP and adjusted third-quarter profit and better-than-expected quarterly sales, sending the company stock higher. A calm and collected Musk on the post-earnings conference call with analysts boosted shares further.

Besides vehicles such as a compact SUV, dubbed the Model Y, and the Tesla Semi freight truck, coming up, Musk talked about plans to make a pickup truck in coming years. It stops my heart. A pickup truck was something Musk had been wanting Tesla to make for a long time, even if he is not sure many people would want to buy it.
When asked why he pushed himself and others so hard, Musk said that the other option would have been the end of Tesla. During the sweeping interview, which lasted more than one hour, Musk also touched on his Twitter habit, and took a swipe at Apple Inc. Musk in September settled with U. Musk and Tesla agreed to the settlement without admitting or denying the allegations, and the deal was formally entered last month. And at least a few modes of transportation will be Tesla free, Musk vowed. There are no plans for a Tesla plane.

ET By Claudia Assis.Electrical lines still hang perilously from poles across the street, but inside the mint-green, one-story Ciudad Dorada senior center, fans blow cool air and refrigerators stocked with insulin and other medicines run cold even as the noon sun broils in a cloudless Caribbean sky.
On its roof are a set of Tesla photovoltaic solar panels, attached via cable to a pair of Tesla batteries hitched to the wall beneath. The company selected the senior center as one of 11 sites on the darkened island that it would equip with power-producing panels and batteries. Constructing the system was simple. But when workers attached the panels and batteries to the old electrical wiring in the former schoolhouse, the batteries blew out. The circuitry issue proved ominous.
But apparent supply shortages, regulatory hurdles and a lack of long-term planning dashed those hopes. Today the island still depends on dirty power from the mainland, and some solar panels and batteries sit useless and broken with another hurricane season less than a month away.
By November, the company sent an unsolicited proposal to the Puerto Rican government. Puerto Rican Gov. Around the same time, Tesla contacted the municipal government on Vieques to begin talks about buying public land on which to build a microgrid, according to Carlos Jirau, a development consultant working for the mayor.
He said he requested a formal proposal but never heard back. A year later, Tesla built a massive solar and battery farm on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Vieques represented not only another test case for its technology but a chance to do some good. Tesla worked quickly.
For the most part, those targeted efforts to restore power after the storm succeeded. Several panels bore the shattered imprints of horse hooves, a predictable problem on an island with one wild horse for every two humans. After they helped to power a makeshift medical center, Tesla moved those solar panels, along with other equipment, to some of the 11, other sites it started work on across Puerto Rico. If Tesla had planned to lay the groundwork for an island-wide microgrid, existing regulations created an obstacle.
On the territorial level, the state-owned Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority enjoyed a monopoly on power generation and distribution. Years of neglect and billions in debt left the power grid that PREPA oversaw fragile and unprepared to integrate new technologies. The federal funding has also been fodder for a fight in Washington as President Donald Trump has raged against Puerto Rico, accusing its officials of mishandling relief money, and Democrats argue that a White House blinded by racism has left millions of American citizens to suffer.
Regulatory changes in Puerto Rico over the past year, however, promise to make it simpler to build renewable energy in the future. But agreeing on microgrids is just a first step.
They have to be maintained. The term refers to the phenomenon of companies or nonprofits bringing photovoltaic panels and batteries to underdeveloped economies and then leaving them to fall into disrepair as the locals administering the systems struggle to maintain them.
The best way to avoid this, Smith said, is for companies or foundations that fund these projects to put aside extra money to hire and train maintenance staff. The new rules allowing energy co-ops offer some hope. That local-ownership model offers fewer openings for private companies to shake down ratepayers. It also sets a standard for long-term contracts that factor in system maintenance. For Tesla, reacting to public need in select places has paid dividends, at least in terms of good press.
Last July, the firm said it would do the same for the entire island nation of Samoa. Over the past year, Tesla repeatedly said in calls with investors that it was prioritizing production of the Model 3 car over batteries for solar units. Wait times for parts of a solar power system ranged from six months to a year, USA Today reported last summer.Founded inCo-op is one of the largest and leading consumer co-operatives, with over 2, stores.

Co-op is not for academic credit. Co-op is a valuable career experience which benefits students seeking employment after graduation. Many employers recruit full time hires from their Co-op and intern pool.
In addition Co-op experience can be a great basis for negotiating a higher starting salary due to the substantial work experience that students acquire. Co-op is recommended for undergraduate students in the spring of their sophomore year or in the junior year around IQP. If a first year student or senior is interested in doing Co-op they need to work with their faculty advisor and the Office of Academic Advising to determine if a Co-op is a feasible option.
Seniors must have undergraduate classes to take upon returning from their Co-op. Students who begin at WPI with college level credit, reach sophomore standing early in their first year, want significant work experience, or wish to earn extra money to support overseas IQP opportunities or other educational experiences should consider a Co-op. Meet with your faculty advisor and the Office of Academic Advising to develop an academic plan including Co-op and your degree requirements.
Meet with the Career Development Center to learn how to search and apply for Co-ops. This includes resume and cover letter writing, job search strategies and resources, interview skills, and salary negotiation. The Career Development Center encourages you to use appointments, drop ins or attend workshops to prepare. If you would like to learn more about Co-op please schedule a Co-op Information appointment.
